Really good debut for the Disheveled Goblin! Interested to see how it continues。

This is Greene’s first book-I’ve followed his YouTube channel for a while and decided to give it a read。 This novella has pretty graphic gore, violence, and body horror, so be aware of that before diving in。 For a debut, I thought it was pretty solid。 The writing was decent, though a bit clunky in places, as I would expect from a first-time author。 There were a couple sections which felt a bit info-dumpy, but not too bad。 The plot revolves around a group of inspectors investigating the murder of This is Greene’s first book-I’ve followed his YouTube channel for a while and decided to give it a read。 This novella has pretty graphic gore, violence, and body horror, so be aware of that before diving in。 For a debut, I thought it was pretty solid。 The writing was decent, though a bit clunky in places, as I would expect from a first-time author。 There were a couple sections which felt a bit info-dumpy, but not too bad。 The plot revolves around a group of inspectors investigating the murder of a noble family, and it is clear that this is the first book in a series because you will have more questions than answers by the end。 Greene creates a world that gives off Victorian and Orwellian vibes, which was not what I was expecting at all, but is pretty intriguing。 I will be reading the next book when it comes out, and see if the theories I have been formulating about this world come to fruition。 Overall, this is a decent debut and I am curious to see where Greene takes the story from here! 。。。more

A noble first outingI love Daniel and his channel, so I had to give his first foray into authorship a try。 It's not a bad story, but not quite to my taste。 A noble first outingI love Daniel and his channel, so I had to give his first foray into authorship a try。 It's not a bad story, but not quite to my taste。 。。。more

What a story, man!The writing style felt a bit ragged in the beginning; the sentences didn't flow well, mainly due to the usage of passive voice。 But after a couple of chapters I was gripped by the story so it didn't bother me as much。The story really was something。 Not to give away spoilers but I didn't expect the route it took。Objectively speaking I should've given this 4 stars, but it's 5 because I can and I'm biased and it's a really solid debut novella。 And I'm sure the character developmen What a story, man!The writing style felt a bit ragged in the beginning; the sentences didn't flow well, mainly due to the usage of passive voice。 But after a couple of chapters I was gripped by the story so it didn't bother me as much。The story really was something。 Not to give away spoilers but I didn't expect the route it took。Objectively speaking I should've given this 4 stars, but it's 5 because I can and I'm biased and it's a really solid debut novella。 And I'm sure the character development would be better if it was a full length novel。P。S。 I can't believe Daniel waited until the last 25% of the book to use word "undulated" :D I thought he would throw that word in the first chance he got just to annoy Merphy。 。。。more

This book is an alright first outing。 Rating: 2。5 Stars - It was the middle of the road but with some bumps。I agree with other reviewers on the site that this book felt more like a teaser for another upcoming book rather than a story on its own。 The book starts out strong with a good introduction to the harsh and dark world we are about to enter。 Following the introduction of the world, the plot, and the main cast, we move through the story at an incredible pace, where we never really get to sit This book is an alright first outing。 Rating: 2。5 Stars - It was the middle of the road but with some bumps。I agree with other reviewers on the site that this book felt more like a teaser for another upcoming book rather than a story on its own。 The book starts out strong with a good introduction to the harsh and dark world we are about to enter。 Following the introduction of the world, the plot, and the main cast, we move through the story at an incredible pace, where we never really get to sit down and explore more of the world, or the relationship between the characters and the world。(view spoiler)[I feel like the story Daniel is trying to tell has been so heavily condensed, that we are missing key elements to really fall in love with it。 The whole story takes place in what seems like 14–18-hour time window (unless we count the epilogue), and we jump between 9 locations where the first 40-50 pages are dedicated to location 1。The world feels generic fantasy, an evil empire where good people work without knowing what is really going on。 The characters seem to have some depth, expect perhaps Samuel who just doesn’t get any real time to shine, and they could have been more interesting if we spend just a bit more time with them。 Khlid was a character that was on the verge of being great if she just had a bit more time to grown on us。 Chapman’s reveal and his personality could have been done a lot better if we had seen it more。 The main characterization we of him is get a is through Khlid, rather than through his own actions, when she is thinking about him。 (hide spoiler)]Overall I liked the set-up, Khlid is a good character but could be much better。 The page count seemed too low for the story that was envisioned。 。。。more

Pacing is rushed。 The characters are not really well realized because of the short story format。 I understand that the next book will have about 2 times the page count and retread some ground to correct this issue。 I am looking forward to it。

I've been following Daniel for a while, and I was insanely excited to read his debut novella。 I value his opinion greatly, and I find he's a very well-spoken individual。 So did his first work of fiction meet my expectations, from a guy with such a background as he does?Considering this is his FIRST work, yeah, sort of。Breach of Peace serves as the introduction to the universe he sets to expand in not only two more stories (that were going to be two novellas but turned into a single book split in I've been following Daniel for a while, and I was insanely excited to read his debut novella。 I value his opinion greatly, and I find he's a very well-spoken individual。 So did his first work of fiction meet my expectations, from a guy with such a background as he does?Considering this is his FIRST work, yeah, sort of。Breach of Peace serves as the introduction to the universe he sets to expand in not only two more stories (that were going to be two novellas but turned into a single book split into two parts), introducing a cast of characters composed of Khlid, Sam and Chapman。 I will say, right off the bat, that the character work and dialog is very, very solid here。 I especially liked Khlid, considering we're mostly following her point of view, but Daniel did a wonderful job portraying the character's thoughts and emotions。 Already, I felt pretty attached to her despite the very small page count (I'm only saying this because I'm really not used to novellas at all)。 Chapman, though the more interesting of the three, felt a little。。。 under-confident。 I feel like Daniel could've spent a few more pages really fleshing the character more, though from what we already have, he is promised to be a wonderful character。 Sam, on the other hand, felt a bit generic。 That's not to say I didn't enjoy him, but he's definitely the more forgettable of the bunch。The world building is also very good in this book。 I felt like Daniel's prose, though a bit inexperienced, worked wonderfully to paint the picture inside of Greene's head。 I felt immersed as I was brought from set piece to set piece from chapter to chapter, which definitely coloured me impressed。 Again, what Daniel manages to achieve using a little over a hundred pages is something that I've seen authors attempt, and fail, to do in full-size novels。The story, though short, is paced very evenly。 Never did I feel like the scenes dragged, nor were they rushed。 The moments that were neglected a bit more was within the character development, I feel, but a lot of that can be excused, which is all I'll say without going into spoilers。 There hook in the story, though not completely original, definitely caught me off guard, and set the foundation for what's to come wonderfully。One thing I will say is that Daniel spent a lot of the book describing gore。 I'm not easily disturbed, and this book didn't disturb me in the slightest, but BOY did Daniel try。 I would say arguably 5% of this whole book is strictly describing how children had their legs torn, how people were mutilated, and you can tell that this is an extreme attempt at shock。 Whether for world-building, the pure shock value, or both, I'm not sure, but it felt a bit tiresome to read。 It was especially tiresome since the book literally opens with a gore scene, which then I thought "Ouh, edgy。 I like it。" And then it went on, and on, and there were a few more scenes where gore was very extensively described。 Think of it like the way Robert Jordan describes dresses, only with children's missing limbs。 That might be an extreme, but I just couldn't help make at least ONE Wheel of Time reference with Daniel Green's work。 I think there are very few things to complain about。 For a debut novel/novella, it's quite good! And I have to admit, I definitely let a lot of things slide because this is Daniel's first work。 Being understanding of that, and even him admitting that this is him essentially testing the waters with this world he wants to build, I think this is a really good read。 Would I recommend it to anyone else, especially if they aren't familiar with Daniel Greene? To be totally honest, probably not。 While this book doesn't have much problems, it also doesn't do anything particularly extraordinarily。 It's a fun story, and works nicely as a setup to this world。 If, when it comes down to it, the full novels make Breach of Peace a must read to fully understand the world of The Lawful Times (the name of the series), then I'll change my mind and absolutely recommend this book。 As it stands, however, and even with things that Daniel has said about the sequel, it seems like Breach of Peace is a wonderful treat to fans of Daniel while they wait for him to fully explore this mysterious and dark world that's been brewing in his brain。5。8/10 。。。more

The plot would be better served in a novel that had more page time to build up and explore。 I liked the plot but it honestly felt rushed。 The prose was sometimes fine but often was quite bad or felt stilted or something。 I liked the characters a lot but the mystery sucked, How the fuck was I supposed to figure out the mystery? Having just finished the book moments ago, I'm debating between a 3 and 4 star rating。 The story is entertaining, enthralling, and short--all positive qualities。 The mystery, for a non-mystery reader, is setup and executed well with a great, if depressing, twist。 However, this is my second time giving this novella a shot。 The first time I put it down, I felt no need to pick it back up。 The story didn't grip me right away, and the prose definitely leaves something to be desired。 Nevertheless, I a Having just finished the book moments ago, I'm debating between a 3 and 4 star rating。 The story is entertaining, enthralling, and short--all positive qualities。 The mystery, for a non-mystery reader, is setup and executed well with a great, if depressing, twist。 However, this is my second time giving this novella a shot。 The first time I put it down, I felt no need to pick it back up。 The story didn't grip me right away, and the prose definitely leaves something to be desired。 Nevertheless, I am a huge fan of the Desheveled Goblin and felt I owed it to him to finish the book。 So I picked it up again, and I really enjoyed it。 The prose still needs a lot of work--Greene repeats small words (typically pronouns) over, and over, and over again with little space between them。 But I continously enjoyed the story more the further along I got。 The debate really comes down to, if I was in a different mood or environment, would I have enjoyed this story the first time picking it up? I honestly don't know。 So the tie breaker comes down to the 1984 vibes that would be too spoiler to explain。 Overall, I'd say this is easily a 3。5 if not a 4 star novella, a very good first novel(la), and I am looking forward to the next installment! 。。。more

I don’t like criticizing what people write for fun or practice because it’s just mean and they didn’t ask my opinion anyway but Daniel published this and he’s making money out of it and I believe he really wants to hear the criticism so。。。 But, in my opinion, this should have been just homework for a writing class or maybe a free story for people to read and give advice。 But whatever。。。people can sell whatever they want and others can buy whatever they want。 Let’s review the book now。 First of a I don’t like criticizing what people write for fun or practice because it’s just mean and they didn’t ask my opinion anyway but Daniel published this and he’s making money out of it and I believe he really wants to hear the criticism so。。。 But, in my opinion, this should have been just homework for a writing class or maybe a free story for people to read and give advice。 But whatever。。。people can sell whatever they want and others can buy whatever they want。 Let’s review the book now。 First of all, some people say this wasn’t amazing because it was a novella but you can write a good story in a novella form too。 This book just had really fundamental problems。 If you think about it, this wasn't even a book, this was the prologue of another book。 (view spoiler)[ remember those random characters who were killed by white walkers in the beginning of Game of Thrones? That's what prologues are for。 Introducing the big villan of the universe by killing random characters that you don't care about。 Daniel writes the same thing but because it's a novella this time I need to care about that random character。 He can't just kill them and expect me to be impressed。 But I didn't care about them so eventually it just turns into a prologue。 A prologue that we paid for! (hide spoiler)]Prose: I think Daniel needs to take a writing class。 And I don’t mean a class about “plot/character development/world-building”。 Because I think those issues are something that he can improve on his own。 I mean he needs to take a class for the act of writing itself。 His vocabulary is obviously very limited。 I’m probably gonna offend some hardcore Brandon Sanderson fans now so if you’re gonna get triggered please don’t continue reading this。 I think Sanderson has started a really bad tradition in High Fantasy which is “if your ideas are good and original then you don’t need to create poetic and elegant prose, you can just write in a simple, repetitive style”。 Unfortunately, Daniel is kind of starting to follow Sanderson’s tradition here。 Now some of you might say it’s just a preference。 Some people like simple language。 But I disagree。 I’m gonna compare this to painting (because that’s what I know:D)。 There are some basic drawing skills (Anatomy, Value, Color Theory, Composition) which you need to know before creating a painting。 Yes I can paint something without knowing anything about those basic skills and you (as an ordinary audience) might even like my painting but does that mean my painting is good in a professional sense? No, my teacher would only criticize my work! Now you have two choices when it comes to creating art。 You either say “I don’t care about skills, I just want to sell” which is something that people do。 (yes I mean Fifty Shades of Gray)。 Or you could say I want to be a good writer and I honestly believe that Daniel wants to be in the second group but I don’t think we should encourage Sanderson’s writing style。 (I’m not saying this book’s story was as good as Sanderson’s works。 I’m just saying that the prose is as simple and repetitive as Sanderson’s prose。) At the end of the day, you’re an author and your prose should be better than my prose in my diary!Story: The story was not interesting at all。 I didn’t care about anything here and part of it is because the writing style was bad。 People were saying that there is a really disgusting and graphic scene at the beginning of this book but there isn’t! I don't know what they’re talking about! Daniel didn’t describe this scene in a horrifying way。 Just saying that someone was butchered is not a graphic scene。 You have to be able to actually paint that scene for the reader, I have to see everything otherwise it would be just like a newspaper article about a murder case! Apparently, some people accused Daniel of sympathizing with these so-called bad characters。 But I don’t even see that。 because these characters are not fleshed out enough, they were just some caricatures on paper, we don’t know them。 How can you say such a thing, when there is literally no character here? (actually you shouldn’t say that anyway, he can write whatever character he wants, doesn’t mean he’s actually supporting their actions!) There is an artificial tension in the story between the characters themselves and between the characters and the so-called Villain。 The two men in the story sound like two 8 year-olds who are fighting with each other over childish things (Honestly, I still don’t know why they were acting that way!)。 There are some fights in the story and twists (if you want to call them twists) which I think were supposed to make me fear for their lives but I just didn’t care because the scenes were not described properly。 There are also some scenes that I think were supposed to be emotional but again I didn’t feel anything。 I’m not gonna talk about world-building because I think novellas are not about that。 I think the amount of world-building that we got here was enough。 Daniel just needed to focus on the plot and characters but as I said he didn’t do a good job。 。。。more

3。5* - a good debut and an enjoyable read。 Good pacing for a novella, and although the start was gruesome enough to make my stomach turn, it was a gripping read。 My criticism would be that there was not enough of the book to develop the characters enough, nor the world itself (particularly political and religious structures), to ensure maximum impact and enjoyment。 I know it's only a novella but slightly more content to build on these would ensure the reader was fully invested in the characters 3。5* - a good debut and an enjoyable read。 Good pacing for a novella, and although the start was gruesome enough to make my stomach turn, it was a gripping read。 My criticism would be that there was not enough of the book to develop the characters enough, nor the world itself (particularly political and religious structures), to ensure maximum impact and enjoyment。 I know it's only a novella but slightly more content to build on these would ensure the reader was fully invested in the characters and aware of the implications certain actions / thoughts had。 Nonetheless this book was apparently exactly what I needed to pull me out of my 5-month reading slump, so thank you Daniel Greene!Full review to come。 。。。more

journey very closely so when Breach of Peace was actually released I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it。 I didn’t know anything about it going into it other than what Daniel has mentioned in his video but I can definitely say I was hooked from the very beginning。 We are introduced to Inspector Khlid as she is called to the murder of the Pruit family。 From the second she arrives we know that this entire family has been butchered in horrific fashion。 We also introduced to Khlid’s husband, Samuel and Inspector Chapman who are all working on this case。 Together the three begin piecing together what they believe happened to the family based on the evidence and all believe that this wasn’t a revenge killing against the family but it was meant to send a message。 A terrorist rebellion has already been mentioned and several attacks and killings have happened throughout the Empire and they believe that these murderers are another attack but they can’t say anything until it is confirmed。 They only have the cellar left to search and they all go down together, although at this point I was feeling that there was something off about Chapman but I couldn’t put my finger on it。 In the basement they are being stalked by a creature of some sort which Khlid manages to take down but none of these seasoned detectives have any clue what this creature is。 So far, Daniel has managed to blend dark fantasy with some classic body horror which I am loving。 Very quickly everything seems to pick up as Chapman makes observations about the case and the victims that aren’t sitting right with Khlid and she decides to keep a closer eye on him especially when he claims to be meeting with an informant of the rebel group which no one has been able to do。 By the time they meet up she realises that he is playing he and demands the truth where he tells her there is no informant only him, which means he is working with the rebels。 Khlid tries to arrest him but she is out of uniform so he has the upper hand, he gives her a concussion and tries to explain about the mysterious thing happening in Warehouse Two and asks her to bring all the help she can as he is going to need it。By the time she returns to the station and explains everything to Sam and her Captain they have a decision to make。 Khlid tells them that she believes what Chapman said about needing help so the Captain puts together a task force to raid the warehouse before the Ministries can get involved。 Initially it seems like everything is going according to plan until the raid begins where Khlid and Sam find Chapman has been tortured and injected with the same black liquid that the creature from the Pruit manor was filled with。 A nurse explains when Khlid begins beating her that the liquid whatever it is changes them and most turn into monsters but Chapman seems to be handling it better than most but Khlid tries to put him out of his misery。 From there everything descends into chaos when they realise one of the Anointed is there。 The Anointed as a special race of demigods changed by the Almighty himself and are above the law as they only answer to the Almighty。 The officers realises they are way out of their depth and this is shown when they begin dying, while Khlid manages to escape and make it back to the station she knows she doesn’t have long as the Anointed is hunting her down and arrives sooner than Khlid expected killing the remaining officers and taking her to be a new test subject。 Overall, Breach of Peace was an amazing novella and a brilliant start to a new dark fantasy series that I will definitely be continuing to read in the future and I can’t wait for more。 This book honestly has it all, it dark, gritty, full of political intrigue, a unique political system with deities and demigods。 This hit all the right buttons for me and at only 130 pages I would highly recommend picking it up right now。 I have to figure out when the next book is going to be coming out because I can’t wait to see what happens next, whether or not Khlid will return in later books or whether we will be following a new set of characters and I hope to learn more about the Anointed as we are only briefly introduced to them here but we do get to witness what they are capable of。 。。。more
